A window tint percentage chart helps you compare light levels. It does not guarantee a certain amount of privacy. For a home, light inside and outside matters as much as the number on the film.

Read the percentage as light transmission

VLT means Visible Light Transmission. Lower numbers let less visible light through under the stated test conditions. Existing glass changes the installed result.

• Around 5%: a very dark appearance with much less daylight.
• Around 15% to 20%: a dark shade that may suit some glare or daytime-screening goals.
• Around 35% to 50%: a lighter balance of shade and daylight.
• Around 70% and above: a high-light-transmission option.

Privacy has a day and night setting

Reflective solar film works best for screening views when outdoors is brighter. At night, with lights on inside, that effect may be lost. A low VLT number does not make clear glass opaque.

Heat control needs another comparison

A darker shade is not always the strongest heat-control product. Compare solar ratings for the exact film on similar glass. UV, infrared, and whole-solar-energy figures describe different things.

Plan the test at home
