A film labeled 15% lets through relatively little visible light. It may help with glare and daytime privacy, but the shade number does not tell you how much energy your building will save.

Separate light control from heat control

VLT measures visible light transmission. Solar heat performance is a different measure. Two films with similar shade can have different solar heat gain and heat-rejection ratings.

For an office that gets hot in the afternoon, compare the film's tested performance on the glass you have. Do not choose a dark shade only because you expect it to reduce the air-conditioning bill.

Check where the heat enters

Walk through the building at the hottest time of day. Note which desks, windows, or displays receive direct sun. Record glare, room temperature, and complaints before deciding where film belongs.

• Check west-facing windows for afternoon exposure.
• Identify single-pane, double-pane, and coated glass.
• Check for shading from overhangs or nearby buildings.
• Review lighting needs before reducing daylight.

Measure results fairly

Compare energy use over similar weather and operating hours. A lower bill can also reflect changes in occupancy, equipment, or electricity rates. A whole-building savings percentage cannot be inferred from the film's heat-rejection rating.

A trial area can help you judge comfort and appearance before a wider rollout. Ask about film-to-glass compatibility and warranty coverage as part of the quote.

Will 15% film provide privacy at night?

Not reliably if it is a reflective solar film and the room is brighter than outdoors. Use a separate night-privacy solution when needed.

Is a 15% film suitable for car front windows?

Do not transfer a building-film choice to a vehicle. Hawaii regulates the combined glass-and-film reading on front side windows. Ask for a separate legal check.
