AIR 80 clear window tint is the film Oahu drivers ask for when the sun on the H-1 is too much but a dark windshield isn't an option. Watch the video above to see how it goes on, then read on for what clear tint does, what Hawaii's tint law allows on a windshield, and how T&T Tinting Specialists tests every car before we install it. We've tinted cars in Honolulu since 1982.
Clear Tint Basics
What Is Clear Window Tint?
Clear window tint is a nearly invisible film that cuts heat and UV without darkening the glass. On a windshield, Hawaii allows it only if the glass and film together still let at least 70% of light through. AIR 80 from LLumar meters about 80% VLT on its own, and we test it on your windshield before installing.
| Option | How it looks | Where it can go on a Hawaii windshield |
|---|
| Clear window tint (such as AIR 80) | Nearly invisible; keeps a clear view day and night | The whole windshield, if glass plus film still meets 70% light transmittance |
| Sun strip (eyebrow tint) | A tinted band across the top | Only above the AS-1 line, or the top 4 inches if there's no AS-1 mark |
| Dark or 50% windshield film | Visibly darker glass | Not allowed below the AS-1 line |

The Film
Watch: AIR 80 Clear Film on a Front Windshield
The video shows an AIR 80 install on a front windshield. AIR 80 is a nano-ceramic film from LLumar. It's applied to the inside of the glass, so the outside of your windshield looks and wipes the same as before. You'll find the film details on our AIR 80 Windshield Heat Blocker page.
Hawaii Tint Law
Is Clear Windshield Tint Legal in Hawaii?
Hawaii's tint law, Hawaii Revised Statutes §291-21.5, treats the windshield in two parts:
Above the AS-1 line
A transparent sun strip is allowed, or within 4 inches of the top if the glass has no AS-1 mark.
Below the AS-1 line
Only transparent material that keeps the windshield within Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 205, which requires at least 70% light transmittance in the driver's view, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains.
That 70% applies to the glass and film together, not the film alone. Not sure where your AS-1 line is? See what the AS-1 line is, or read our full guide to Hawaii window tint laws.
Our Process
How We Install AIR 80 at T&T
01
Meter your windshield
We measure how much light your bare windshield lets through.
02
Test a sample
We temporarily apply a piece of AIR 80 and meter the glass and film together.
03
Confirm it passes
If the combined reading stays at 70% or higher, we go ahead. If it doesn't, we won't install it on that windshield.
04
Install and re-check
Our installers apply the film inside the windshield and meter it again after installation.
Pair it with legal shades on the rest of the car: our ceramic window tint handles the side and rear glass, and NanoShield windshield protection helps guard against chips. See the best tint for Hawaii heat to compare films.
FAQs
Clear Window Tint FAQs
Is clear windshield tint legal in Hawaii?
Yes, if it's transparent and the windshield still meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 205 with the film on, meaning at least 70% light transmittance. HRS §291-21.5 allows transparent film on that part of the windshield. Darker film is only allowed in a strip above the AS-1 line.
What does 80 windshield tint mean?
It means the film lets about 80% of visible light through (80% VLT). Because the windshield glass already blocks some light, the combined reading of glass plus film is lower than 80%, which is why we meter your windshield with a sample before installing.
Does clear window tint block heat?
Clear films like AIR 80 are made to cut heat and UV rather than visible light, so the glass stays clear. How much heat a film blocks depends on the product; ask us for the manufacturer's spec sheet for the film you're considering.
Does clear tint block UV rays?
Yes. Quality window films block up to 99% of the sun's harmful UV rays, according to the International Window Film Association, and that includes clear films.
What if my windshield fails the meter test?
If your windshield and the film sample together read below 70%, we won't install AIR 80 on that windshield. You can still tint the top strip above the AS-1 line and use legal shades on the side and rear windows.
Can I put clear tint on my side windows too?
Yes. Clear and light films can go on side and rear windows. Hawaii's front side windows need at least 35% light transmission, plus or minus 6%, so a clear film is well within the limit.
