The Basics
Residential window tinting (also called home window film) is a thin, durable film our installers apply to the inside of your windows. Depending on the film, it can:
Window films lower the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), the share of the sun's heat that comes through the glass, according to the International Window Film Association.
On TVs, computer screens and kitchen counters.
Quality window films block up to 99% of the sun's harmful UV rays, the IWFA says, helping protect your skin and slow fading of floors, furniture and artwork (IWFA).
During the day, or all day with frosted and decorative film.
With safety and security film that helps hold broken glass together.
Film Options
| Film type | What it does | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|
| Clear or light solar film (such as LLumar SelectPro Vista) | Targets heat and UV while keeping a clear, natural look | Living rooms, lanai doors and ocean or mountain views |
| Reflective solar film | Bounces back more sunlight and adds daytime privacy | West-facing windows and rooms that get the hottest afternoon sun |
| Decorative and privacy film | Frosted, patterned or gradient film that blocks the view in | Bathrooms, street-facing windows and glass doors |
| Safety and security film | Thicker film that helps hold glass together when it's struck | Ground-floor windows, sliders and storm-season protection |
For privacy and design ideas, see our decorative privacy film. For stronger glass, ask about safety and security film, including DefenseLite and C-Bond systems.
Why Window Film
Oahu homes get strong sun all year, and big glass doors that open to a lanai let in a lot of it. Here's where homeowners notice film most:
West- and south-facing rooms that heat up every afternoon.
TV rooms, home offices and kitchens with bright reflections.
Hardwood floors, rugs, furniture and art near sunny windows.
Street-facing windows and homes close to the neighbors.
Rooms where the AC runs hard to keep up with the sun.
Our guide to residential window film for Hawaii heat and privacy goes deeper on choosing film by room, and you can compare options in the best tint for Hawaii heat.
